Everything you need to know before booking a Camper Charter campervan
Thinking about hiring a campervan for the first time? Or perhaps you have done it before and just want to make sure you have all the details right before you book. Either way, this is the right place to start.
At Camper Charter, we are a family-run campervan hire business based just outside Romsey in Hampshire, in the heart of the Test Valley. We look after a small fleet of VW campervans and handle every booking personally. Below, we have answered the questions we get asked most often, so you can plan your trip with complete confidence.
What features can I expect in the campervans?
All of our campervans come ready for the road with everything you need to make yourself at home. Every hire includes a gas stove, basic kitchen utensils, a cosy sleeping area with a mattress topper for extra comfort, camp chairs, and levelling ramps and chocks to help you get settled on uneven ground. Most of our vans, also come with a fridge and additional extras. The specification varies slightly between vehicles, so it is worth checking the individual van page on our website to see exactly what is on board.
We also offer optional extras to make your trip even more enjoyable. If there is something specific you are looking for, just get in touch and we will do our best to help.
How do I make a booking?
Booking with us is simple and personal. You can browse our vans and submit a booking request through the booking link on each van page, or if you have questions first, get in touch via the contact page or WhatsApp on 07908 293703.
We manage all enquiries personally, so you will always be speaking to someone who knows the vans well. Once your booking is confirmed, we will be in touch with everything you need ahead of collection.
What is the minimum hire period?
All our vans are available for a minimum of three days/ two nights. There is no maximum — longer trips are very welcome, and we are happy to discuss availability for extended hires.
How much does it cost to hire a campervan?
Hire rates start from £75 per night for Lily, who is currently available at an introductory rate while her full conversion is completed. Belle, Luna, Rosie, and Florence are all available from £80 per night. Rate vary by season.
Additional fees apply for optional extras such as an awning, a bike rack, early collection or late return. If you are not sure what you need, just ask and we will talk you through the options.
Do I need to be a certain age to hire?
To hire one of our campervans, you need to be between 21 and 75 years old and hold a full, valid UK driving licence with at least two years of driving experience. You must also have no more than six penalty points on your licence.
We will carry out a licence check as part of the booking process, which will require proof of address. Overseas licences are accepted but may be subject to additional checks. If you are unsure whether you qualify, just get in touch and we will be happy to talk it through.
Where are you based and how do I collect the van?
We are based near Romsey in Hampshire, in the heart of the Test Valley — about 10 miles north of Southampton and 12 miles south of Winchester. Collection and return both take place at our address, which we share once your booking is confirmed.
We ask that collections happen at an agreed time so we can give you a proper handover. We take time over this — we will walk you through how everything works, from the gas and the electrics to getting the bed set up, so you feel completely comfortable before you set off.
How should I return the van?
We ask that all vans are returned clean and tidy and with a full tank of fuel. A short check-in will take place on return to note any damage or breakages. We do reserve the right to charge additional cleaning fees if a van is returned in an unacceptable state, but this is something we have very rarely needed to do — our customers look after the vans well.
Which payment methods can I use?
We accept all major credit cards and bank transfers (BACS). If you have any questions about payment, just get in touch and we will be happy to help.
Are the vans pet friendly?
Absolutely. All our vans welcome well-behaved dogs. We know that for many families, a holiday simply is not complete without the family dog, so you are very welcome to bring yours along.
We just ask that you bring a blanket or bed for your pet and take care to leave the van clean at the end of the hire. Any damage caused by pets would fall under the standard damage policy, so it is worth being mindful of this while you are travelling.
What happens if something goes wrong during the hire?
We are contactable throughout your hire and will do our best to help with anything that comes up. All our vans are maintained to a high standard before every hire, but in the unlikely event of a breakdown, RAC cover is included as part of the hire.
We ask that hirers do not attempt any repairs themselves. If you experience a problem on the road, contact us first on WhatsApp at 07908 293703 and we will guide you through the next steps straight away.
How does your cancellation policy work?
We understand that plans can change. Our cancellation policy depends on the booking platform you used. If you need to cancel, please contact us as soon as you can — via WhatsApp on 07908 293703
