Exploring the New Forest by campervan

The New Forest National Park covers 219 square miles of ancient woodland, open heathland and river valleys — one of the most rewarding destinations in the south of England for a campervan trip. Here are some of the highlights our hirers keep coming back for:

  • Wild ponies and open heathland — the Forest’s famous free-roaming ponies, cattle and donkeys are part of everyday life here. Drive or cycle the quiet back roads in the morning and you’ll almost always find them grazing at the roadside.

  • Cycling on traffic-free trails — the New Forest has over 100 miles of cycling routes, including the popular Castleman Trailway and miles of purpose-built forest tracks. Hire bikes locally in Brockenhurst or Burley if you don’t bring your own.

  • Walking in ancient woodland — from the towering oaks and beeches of Mark Ash Wood to the wide open moorland around Fritham, the walking here is endlessly varied. The New Forest Walking Festival runs in spring and autumn if you’re visiting then.

  • Burley, Brockenhurst and Lyndhurst — three very different but equally charming Forest villages. Burley is known for its cider heritage, Brockenhurst for its tea rooms and rail access, Lyndhurst for the New Forest Centre museum and a cluster of good pubs.

  • Campsites within the National Park — the Forestry England campsites at Hollands Wood, Ashurst and Roundhill are well-placed for exploring the Forest by van and all accept campervans. Booking ahead is essential in summer.

  • The Jurassic Coast as a next stop — for longer trips, Bournemouth is under 30 miles from the Forest’s southern edge, and from there the Jurassic Coast stretches west all the way to Exmouth.
