Frequently asked questions
What's the best time of year to hire a campervan in the UK?
The UK's campervan season is at its busiest from June through to September, when the days are longest and the New Forest, Jurassic Coast and south coast are at their best for touring. If you'd prefer quieter roads and a bit more flexibility on dates, spring and early autumn are well worth considering too — the weather's often still kind, and you may find it easier to book the van and dates you want.
What features can I expect in the campervans?
Every Camper Charter VW campervan comes fully equipped for the road: a gas stove and sink, basic kitchen utensils, a cosy sleeping area with a mattress topper to make it even more comfortable, a table and a couple of camp chairs, levelling ramps and chocks. Most vans also have a fridge and a small freezer — check each van's individual listing for the full specification.. We also offer optional extras to make your trip even better, from awnings to bike racks, so just get in touch on WhatsApp (07908 293703) and we'll talk you through what's available for your trip.
Are the vans pet friendly?
Yes — all of our campervans are dog-friendly. We're happy to welcome well-behaved dogs on board; we just ask that you bring a blanket or bed for them to settle on and take care to leave the van clean and fresh for the next hirer.
Can I take the campervan abroad, or on a ferry to Europe?
Yes — our campervans can be taken across to Ireland and mainland Europe. There are some additional costs involved through our European Pack, and we'll need to arrange some extra paperwork on your behalf, which can take a few weeks to organise — so let us know as early as possible if you're planning a trip abroad and we'll get everything sorted in good time.
How do I make a booking?
You can browse our vans and submit a booking request through the booking link, or get in touch with us via WhatsApp on 07908 293703 or through our contact page if you have any questions first. We manage every enquiry personally, so you'll always be speaking with someone who knows the vans inside out. Once your booking is confirmed, we'll send you everything you need ahead of collection.
What is the minimum hire period?
All of our vans are available for a minimum of three days and two nights. There's no maximum stay — longer trips are very welcome, and we're always happy to discuss availability for extended hires.
How much does it cost to hire a campervan?
Hire rates start from £89 per day/ night. Rates can vary by season and availability, and additional fees may apply for optional extras such as an awning, bike rack, or early collection and return. Get in touch via WhatsApp (07908 293703) for an up-to-date quote for your dates.
Do I need to be a certain age to hire?
You'll need to be aged between 21 and 75 and hold a full, valid UK driving licence with at least two years' experience and no more than six penalty points to hire one of our vans. We carry out a licence check, which requires proof of address. Overseas licences are accepted but may be subject to additional checks — just ask us if you're unsure whether yours qualifies.
Is a deposit required, and how much is it?
Yes — we take a £1,000 deposit as a pre-authorisation on your credit card on the day of collection, much like a hotel does. This simply places a hold on the funds rather than taking the money from your account, and it's released automatically if we don't need to make a claim against it. If you'd rather pay a lower deposit, we can reduce it for a small daily charge — just ask when you book. If you've booked through a booking platform, your deposit is handled directly by that platform.
Where do I collect my campervan, and how does handover work?
We're based just outside Romsey in Hampshire, in the heart of the Test Valley — about 10 miles north of Southampton and 12 miles south of Winchester. Collection and return both take place at our address, which we share once your booking is confirmed. We always agree a collection time in advance so we can give you a proper handover and make sure you feel completely confident in the van before you set off.
What condition do I need to return the campervan in?
Please return the van clean and tidy, with a full tank of fuel. We'll do a short check-in together when you return to check for any damage or breakages, and we reserve the right to charge an additional cleaning fee if the van comes back in an unacceptable state.
What payment methods does Camper Charter accept?
We accept all major credit cards as well as bank transfers (BACS). If you have any questions about payment or how deposits work, just drop us a message on WhatsApp (07908 293703) and we'll talk you through it.
What is Camper Charter's cancellation policy?
We understand that plans can change. Our cancellation policy depends on the platform you booked through, so if you need to cancel or amend a booking, contact us as soon as possible via WhatsApp (07908 293703) and we'll talk you through your options.
What happens if the campervan breaks down during my trip?
All of our vans are maintained to a high standard ahead of every hire, and we're contactable throughout your trip if anything crops up. In the unlikely event of a breakdown, RAC roadside cover is included with every hire. Please don't attempt any repairs yourself — just call us first and we'll take it from there.
