Summer is here, and there's nothing quite like the open road and the freedom of a campervan adventure! But let's be honest, when the mercury rises, a small space can quickly feel a bit...toasty. Don't let the heat put a damper on your wanderlust! At Camper Charter, we want you to have the most comfortable and enjoyable trip possible. So, we've put together our top tips and hacks for keeping cool in your campervan, even when the sun is blazing.
1. Strategic Parking is Your Best Friend:
This is perhaps the most effective tip!
Seek Shade: Whenever possible, park under trees or next to buildings that will cast shade over your campervan, especially during the hottest parts of the day (roughly 12 PM - 4 PM).
Orient for Airflow: If there's a breeze, try to position your campervan so that windows and vents are facing into the wind for maximum cross-ventilation.
Consider the Sun's Path: Pay attention to where the sun will be throughout the day. Parking with your least-used side facing the sun can help keep the main living area cooler.
2. Master the Art of Ventilation:
Good airflow is crucial for dispelling heat.
Open Windows & Vents (Strategically): Create a cross-breeze by opening windows on opposite sides of the van. If you have a roof vent, open it to let hot air escape upwards.
Fan Power! A portable, battery-operated fan can make a huge difference. Point it towards you for immediate relief, or use it to help circulate air throughout the van. Many campervans also come with built-in fans.
3. Block Out the Sun's Rays:
Preventing heat from getting in is half the battle!
Thermal Blinds/Curtains: Our campervans come with blinds, but using thermal-backed blinds or insulated window covers can significantly reduce heat gain. If you're really struggling, a reflective sunshade for the windscreen can work wonders.
Reflective Sunshades: For the front windscreen, a reflective sunshade is a must-have when parked up. It bounces the sun's rays away, keeping the cab area cooler.
Awning Deployment: If your campervan has an awning, extend it! It provides a fantastic shaded outdoor living space and also helps to shade the side of your van.
4. Low-Tech Cooling Hacks:
Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best!
Damp Towels: Drape a damp towel over yourself or near a fan for an evaporative cooling effect. Just be mindful of moisture build-up in the van.
Spray Bottle with Water: A fine mist of water can be incredibly refreshing on your skin. Keep one handy!
Cool Compresses: A damp cloth or a gel pack (cooled in your fridge/freezer) applied to pulse points (wrists, neck, temples) can quickly cool you down.
Lightweight Bedding: Opt for cotton sheets and lightweight blankets instead of duvets.
5. Hydration & Personal Comfort:
Look after yourself from the inside out!
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. Keep your water bottles full and easily accessible in your fridge.
Eat Lightly: Heavy, hot meals will only make you feel warmer. Opt for salads, fruits, and cold snacks.
Cool Showers: If your campervan has a shower, a quick cool rinse can be incredibly revitalising. Many campsites also offer shower facilities.
Wear Loose, Light Clothing: Natural fabrics like cotton are best for breathability.
6. Evening Cool Down Routine:
Evenings can still be warm, so a routine helps.
Ventilate Before Bed: As the sun goes down and the air cools, open all your vents and windows to flush out any lingering hot air.
Portable Fans for Sleep: Position a small fan near your bed for a personal breeze during the night.
Don't let the fear of heat deter you from an incredible campervan adventure! By implementing these simple tips and hacks, you'll be well-equipped to stay cool, comfortable, and make the most of your summer road trip.
