Explore Wiltshire’s top sights and scenic treasures

Wiltshire is a county that perfectly suits exploration, with wide open landscapes, historic villages, ancient monuments and plenty of quiet spots to take it all in. It’s an easy and enjoyable destination to reach, making Wiltshire a popular choice for visitors looking for a mix of history, nature and relaxed countryside experiences.

Whether you’re planning a long weekend or part of a wider South West adventure, here are some of the top places to visit in Wiltshire.

Stonehenge and the Avebury World Heritage Site

No visit to Wiltshire would be complete without exploring its prehistoric landmarks. Stonehenge may be world‑famous, but the wider landscape around it is just as impressive. Parking and visitor facilities are well organised, and arriving early or later in the day can make the experience more peaceful.

Just as special is Avebury, a place that many visitors find more immersive and relaxed than Stonehenge. The stone circle surrounds a village you can walk through freely, and it feels wonderfully immersive. Nearby Silbury Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow are also well worth a stop and are easily accessible by campervan.

Salisbury and Salisbury Cathedral

Salisbury is a great base for a day of culture and gentle sightseeing. The cathedral is home to the best‑preserved original Magna Carta and boasts the tallest spire in the UK. The close surrounding the cathedral is ideal for a relaxed walk, and the city itself has plenty of independent shops, cafés and traditional pubs.

Salisbury also works well as a stopover location if you’re travelling further west into Dorset or Somerset.

The White Horses of Wiltshire

Wiltshire’s chalk hills are home to a series of striking white horses carved into the landscape. The Westbury White Horse is perhaps the most dramatic, with far‑reaching views across the countryside, but others at Cherhill, Alton Barnes and Pewsey are equally rewarding to visit.

Travelling by campervan makes it easy to link several of these sites together, and many have nearby walking routes and picnic spots where you can slow down and enjoy the scenery.

Lacock Village and Abbey

Lacock is one of those villages that feels untouched by time. With its timber‑framed cottages, historic streets and beautiful abbey, it’s no surprise that it has been used as a filming location for numerous period dramas and films.

The abbey itself has a fascinating history and lovely grounds to explore, while the village is ideal for a leisurely wander and a pub lunch. It’s a particularly good stop if you enjoy photography or simply soaking up traditional English village life.

The Kennet and Avon Canal

For something a little slower paced, the Kennet and Avon Canal offers miles of peaceful towpaths, locks and waterside pubs. Places like Devizes, Bradford on Avon and Pewsey are all great access points and work well with campervan travel.

Walking or cycling along the canal is a lovely way to break up a driving day, and there are plenty of scenic spots nearby where you can park up and enjoy a quiet evening.

Savernake Forest and the Pewsey Vale

If you’re looking for open space and nature, Savernake Forest is a fantastic place to explore. Ancient oak trees, wide trails and a real sense of tranquillity make it ideal for walking and wildlife spotting.

Nearby, the Pewsey Vale offers classic Wiltshire countryside, with rolling hills, charming villages and easy access to the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s perfect for those who prefer scenic drives with plenty of opportunities to stop and explore along the way.

Exploring Wiltshire

Wiltshire is easy to explore, with short distances between highlights, straightforward roads, and plenty of open space once you leave the main towns. Many visitors combine Wiltshire with trips into Dorset, Somerset or the Cotswolds, creating a relaxed loop that’s easy to tailor to your own pace.

Wiltshire offers something for everyone: history, culture, nature and picturesque landscapes.
