Explore Devon's Stunning Coastlines, Moorlands, and Villages by Campervan

Devon is one of England's most rewarding counties for campervan travel. It's a place where dramatic moorland gives way to sheltered coves, where medieval market towns sit alongside surfer's beaches, and where every country lane seems to lead somewhere worth stopping. With two national parks, two coastlines, and countless hidden corners, Devon offers something for every kind of road tripper.

Whether you're planning a long weekend or joining a wider South West adventure, here are some of the top places to visit in Devon by campervan.

Dartmoor National Park

Hound Tor

Dartmoor is Devon's wild heart. This ancient moorland stretches across the heart of the county and rewards those who take time to explore it properly. The landscape is dramatic and open, with rocky tors rising above sweeping grassland, and rivers cutting through wooded valleys below.

Two of the most iconic viewpoints are Haytor and Hound Tor, both easily accessible and offering far-reaching views across the moor. The Dartmoor National Park Authority maintains a wealth of trails and visitor information at www.dartmoor.gov.uk.

Dartmoor is also a designated Dark Sky Reserve, making it a wonderful place to spend an evening under the stars. The market town of Tavistock and the charming village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor both make excellent bases when exploring the national park.

Exmoor: Where Devon Meets Somerset

Exmoor National Park straddles the border between Devon and Somerset, and the Devon side is well worth exploring. From the twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth, visitors can walk the cliff railway, explore the Valley of Rocks, and enjoy some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in England. More information at www.exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk.

The roads through Exmoor are narrow and winding in places, so take them slowly and enjoy the journey itself as part of the adventure.

The South Devon Coast and Jurassic Coast Gateway

Devon's south coast offers a very different character to its wilder north. Towns like Dartmouth, Salcombe, and Kingsbridge sit around beautiful estuaries and are ideal for exploring by campervan.

The South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty stretches along much of this coastline, with the South West Coast Path providing spectacular walking routes. At the eastern edge of Devon, Beer and Seaton sit at the gateway to the UNESCO Jurassic Coast.

Exeter: Cathedral City and Cultural Hub

Devon's county city is a rewarding stop. Exeter Cathedral is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in England, and the medieval underground passages beneath the city are a unique attraction. Visit www.exeter-cathedral.org.uk for visitor information.

The historic quayside area is ideal for a relaxed afternoon, with independent cafés, galleries, and easy walking routes along the river. Exeter also provides good access to the M5 corridor, making it a practical base for those arriving from the east.

Brixham, Torquay, and the English Riviera

The English Riviera — encompassing Torquay, Paignton, and Brixham — has a character all of its own. Brixham's working harbour is particularly atmospheric, with its colourful fishing fleet and the replica of Francis Drake's Golden Hind. More at www.englishriviera.co.uk.

Just inland, Bygones Museum in Torquay and the Paignton Zoo offer great family-friendly options. More at www.paigntonzoo.org.uk.

North Devon: Saunton, Croyde, and Westward Ho!

North Devon's Atlantic-facing coastline draws surfers, walkers, and wildlife enthusiasts in equal measure. Saunton Sands is one of England's finest beaches: three miles of open sand backed by the Braunton Burrows dune system, which is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The village of Croyde has a relaxed surf culture, while the traditional resort of Westward Ho! offers a long pebble ridge and open beach. Barnstaple serves as a useful market town hub for this part of Devon.

RHS Garden Rosemoor

For garden lovers, RHS Garden Rosemoor near Great Torrington is a highlight of North Devon. The garden covers 65 acres and features everything from formal rose gardens to woodland trails. Details at www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/rosemoor.

Planning a Campervan Trip Through Devon

Devon is well set up for campervan travel, with a wide range of campsites, farm pitches, and Certified Locations spread across the county. Some lanes — particularly on Dartmoor and Exmoor — can be tight, so sensible route planning pays off. OS Maps or a dedicated motorhome sat nav are worth using.

The county is large enough to warrant several days of exploration. Many visitors combine Devon with trips into Cornwall or Somerset, creating a relaxed South West loop that can be tailored to suit any pace.

Tips for a Memorable Devon Adventure

•        Book campsites ahead in peak season — Devon is popular in summer

•        Allow extra time on moorland and coastal roads — the lanes are narrow but beautiful

•        Keep an eye on tides if heading to cove beaches — many are only accessible at low tide

•        Stay flexible — some of Devon's best moments come from unexpected discoveries along the way
